Sawing metal – with a jigsaw

A metal plate is sawn with a Bosch jigsaw.
With the right saw blade, you can also cut metal with a jigsaw.

Introduction

All DIYers know that wood is no problem for a jigsaw. But did you know that you can also saw metal with the right saw blade? We'll tell you all the tricks you need to know.

You need
  • work gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • ear protection
  • cooling spray
  • Metal plate (max. 10 mm thick)

Let's go - step by step

Sawing metal with the jigsaw

Want to saw metal? You can do it quite easily with a jigsaw: Grab the right metal saw blade and get started! Our video gives you helpful tips on how to cut metal with a jigsaw, from the right jigsaw blade to dealing with the heat generated.

Step 1 5

Protective clothing

A person puts on a work glove.
Safety is always a priority – especially when sawing metal.

You need: Jigsaw, work gloves, Safety goggles, ear protection

Metal is much harder than wood, so there are a few things to keep in mind when sawing metal with a jigsaw. This includes wearing protective clothing, because a lot of heat is generated when sawing metal. Always wear eye and ear protection and protective gloves.

Step 2 5

Inserting the saw blade

A saw blade for cutting metal is used on a Bosch jigsaw.
Bosch jigsaw blades for cutting metal are identified by their blue shank.

You need: Jigsaw, Jigsaw blade set including a jigsaw blade for metal

A special saw blade, such as Basic for Metal, is indispensable when sawing metal. Bosch saw blades for metal can be identified by their blue shank. For compatibility with specific metals and material thicknesses, please refer to our jigsaw blade overview . Insert the blade into the jigsaw. We also explain how to change  saw blades.

Step 3 5

Deactivating pendulum action

The pendulum action is switched off on a Bosch jigsaw.
Turn the pendulum control to 0 to switch it off.

You need: Jigsaw

The saw blade's pendulum action is not required when sawing metal. Fine chips are also removed effectively without this function. In addition, more precise cuts can be made without the additional back and forth movement of the saw blade. Before sawing, turn the pendulum action switch on the jigsaw to 0 to deactivate this function.

Step 4 5

Applying cooling spray

Cooling spray is sprayed onto a metal plate.
Cooling spray reduces the heat generated when sawing the metal.

You need: cooling spray

After you have drawn your cutting line on the metal plate, be sure to follow the tip below: Apply cooling spray (alternatively, a little oil will also work) to the line. This reduces the intense heat that is generated on the workpiece when sawing, which means that your saw blade will not wear out as quickly. In simple terms: The harder the metal being sawn, the more important the cooling.

Step 5 5

Saws

A metal plate is sawn with a Bosch jigsaw.
Saw the metal with minimal pressure.

You need: Jigsaw, Jigsaw blade set, Metal plate

Secure the workpiece with G-clamps and start sawing. Guide the jigsaw through the metal with a firm hand but minimal pressure.
You may need to adjust the stroke rate of the saw beforehand. You can determine the right stroke rate by performing a test cut.
After sawing, it is worth grinding the cut edge again.
