Introduction

Children and adults alike enjoy the wonder of opening up 24 tiny surprises. Bring joy to your loved ones this holiday season by building a decorative Advent calendar. After you’ve finished with the basics, the design and the contents of the packages are up to you. We’ll show you how to build a creative Advent calendar in this step-by-step guide.

Have you heard about our 18-volt system yet? It offers a huge variety of devices for many different applications. The thing that makes the project below so special is that you can use the same rechargeable battery for every part of this project. Simply swap out the battery pack, inserting it into a different device that is part of the 18-volt system, and continue to the next step.

It should go without saying that your safety is paramount throughout every step of the project, so make sure you take the necessary precautions to protect yourself. You can find an overview of the correct protective clothing you need when using each type of tool here:

You need
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • cord
  • christmas decorations
  • 80-grain sandpaper with sanding block
  • g-clamps
  • protective goggles
  • gloves
  • ear protection
  • 1 side section from a wooden shelf, approx. 130 x 30 cm
  • 4 spacer sleeves, approx. 10 mm
  • 4 screws, 6 x 120 mm
  • 4 wall plugs, size 8
L: Length, W: Width, H: Height, D: Diameter
Step 1 10

Cut the shelf sections to size

The side of a shelf is being cut to size using the Bosch jigsaw.

You need: Jigsaws, Jigsaw blade T 101 B, g-clamps, protective goggles, gloves, ear protection, 1 side section from a wooden shelf, approx. 130 x 30 cm

So let’s start! Start by sawing off the legs of the shelf. That way you can ensure that the frame of the Advent calendar is the same length at both ends.

Step 2 10

Marking the drill holes

The Zamo laser measure and the tape adapter are being used to measure the side section of a wooden shelf.

You need: Laser measure, Zamo - Tape Adapter, pencil, Frames

In this step, you will prepare the drill holes needed to mount the frame to the wall. To do this, position the Zamo at the edge of the wooden frame and use the tape adapter to measure a distance of 10 cm from the edge of the frame. Repeat on the other side of the frame. Mark each point so that it is centred on the shelf section.

Step 3 10

Drilling the holes

A Bosch drill is being used to drill a hole in the side section of a shelf.
A Bosch countersink cutter is being used to countersink the hole in the shelf side section.

You need: Cordless combi drill, Brad point drill bits, Metal Drill Bit HSS-R, DIN 338 Set 6 Pieces, protective goggles, g-clamps, Frames

Now you can drill a hole at each of the markings you have made. Make sure that you drill each hole at a right angle (image 1).

Then use the countersink cutter to countersink each of the drill holes (image 2). This will prevent the wood from splitting when you screw it into place later on.

Step 4 10

Prepare the holes for the decorations

A Bosch drill is being used to drill holes in the side section of a shelf.

You need: Cordless combi drill, Brad point drill bits, protective goggles, g-clamps, Frames

Shelf side sections frequently have a number of pre-drilled holes on one side for mounting the individual shelves. We want to use these holes to hang the decorations and packages for the Advent calendar with short sections of cord. Start by drilling all the way through the pre-drilled holes in the outer row of the frame. Now take the sandpaper and the sanding block. Bend the sandpaper and fold it up over the edges of the sanding block. Carefully sand the wood until it is smooth, taking care to eliminate any splinters.

Step 5 10

Measure the distance between the holes

A Bosch Zamo tape adapter is being used to take measurements on a wooden frame.
A Bosch Zamo tape adapter is being used to measure the distance between two slats on a wooden frame.

You need: Laser measure, Zamo - Tape Adapter, Frames

Before you can position your Advent calendar on the wall using the Atino line level, you must first measure the distance between the holes in the frame. To do this, position the Zamo at one of the holes and use the tape adapter to measure the horizontal distance between the holes on each side (image 1). Then measure the vertical distance between the holes (image 2). Write down these measurements, as you will need them again in step 7.

Step 6 10

Paint the frame

A wooden frame is being painted red using a paintbrush.

You need: paintbrush, Frames, Paint

Now you can paint the frame in the colour of your choice. We decided to go with a lovely, festive red.

Tip: You can also sand the wood again after it is dry to give it a cool, vintage look.

Step 7 10

Position the Advent calendar

An Atino line level is attached to a wall. A person is pressing the start button on the Atino line level. The LED lights up red.

You need: Bosch Atino, pencil

You can now start positioning the Advent calendar on the wall. To do this, you will need to refer back to the measurements you made in step 5. Mount the Atino to the upper left position on the wall and turn the device on (image 1). Rotate the Atino until the LED lights up green. The Atino line level is now perfectly aligned, and you can mark the first drill hole in the centre of the Atino. Pull out the tape measure horizontally and use a pencil to mark the drill hole for the second mounting position at 98 cm (image 2). This corresponds to the length you measured in step 5. Then, rotate the Atino 90 degrees clockwise until the LED lights up green again. Now, make another mark on the wall that is 27 cm below the first one (image 3). This distance corresponds to the vertical measurement you made in step 5. Next, remove the Atino line level from the wall and mount it on the wall again at the lower mark. Then, simply rotate it until the LED lights up green, pull out the measuring tape and mark the position of the drill hole on the right at 98 cm. Now you have marked all four drill holes.

Step 8 10

Drill the holes and insert the wall plugs

A Bosch drill is being used to drill a hole in a wall.

You need: Cordless combi drill, concrete drill bit, protective goggles, 4 wall plugs, size 8

Now, use the drill to drill holes in the spots you have marked on the wall. Then, sink a wall plug into each hole.

Step 9 10

Mount the frame to the wall

A screw is protruding from both sides of a red painted frame. A spacer has been placed on the tip of the screw.
A Bosch drill is being used to screw a red wooden frame to the wall.

You need: Cordless combi drill, 4 screws, 6 x 120 mm, 4 spacer sleeves, 10 mm, Painted frame

Now you can proceed to mount the frame to the wall. Insert one screw into each of the four holes and then place a spacer on the tip of each screw (image 1). You may now proceed to carefully screw the Advent calendar to the wall (image 2).

Step 10 10

Attach the mounting brackets

A red Advent calendar with 24 small packages is hanging on a wall. A person is decorating the calendar.

You need: Christmas decorations, Cord

The hard part is finished. Now you can decorate the frame however you like. To do this, cut the cord to different lengths. Hang packages, sacks or ornaments on the strings, and thread the top end of the string through one of the many pre-drilled holes in the bottom of the frame. Hang as many decorations as you like.

Tip: Decorate the inside of the frame with string lights, figurines or any other decorations that inspire you. We wish you a wonderful holiday season!
