Bedroom for dreaming: seven ideas on how to better design your bedroom

A bedroom that has a clear concept helps you feel really at home: a large bed in earthy tones stands in front of a high wall painted in the trend colour emerald.
Our seven bedroom tips will help you give your bedroom that special touch to make you feel really comfortable in it.

Colour scheme and style in the bedroom

A bedroom with an earthy colour scheme: a large bed in grey, beige and green fabrics stands in front of a high wall painted in the trend colour emerald.
Cosy and calming: that is the effect of earthy colours like grey, beige and green. They can be combined particularly well.

The first question you need to ask yourself when you are planning spaces is: what feeling do you want the room to evoke? The colour scheme plays a decisive role here. Here is a little insight into the colour effect: white expresses purity and makes the room look modern, simple and trusting. On the other hand, dark tones create a sense of security. If you want the bedroom to radiate tranquillity, try reaching for blue. But be careful: blue can also quickly appear cold. You need a good hand and a little skill in choosing or mixing colours here. Now things get trickier: combining colours with each other. We recommend sticking to one level of intensity. In our example: combine the trend colour emerald with several shades of green.

Tricks of the trade: make the most of your bedroom with the right layout

A bright modern bedroom with an industrial loft look and a centrally positioned bed. The room feels very spacious, is flooded with light and centred around the bed.
Do you want a bedroom with style? Then you should definitely read our tips on spatial distribution in rooms! We show you what to keep in mind when planning your bedroom. Have fun rethinking, reimagining and reimagining!

Have you ever thought about how you want to distribute things in the room? A classic question: where should the bed go? Next to the window, under part with the sloping ceiling, in the middle of the room? You should pay particular attention to the proportions in the room when planning your bedroom; these can be influenced by the interior design that you choose. Unfavourable proportions such as low ceilings can be compensated for with floor-to-ceiling cabinets, for example. On the other hand, high ceilings look particularly good if the colours on the walls provide contrast. For large bedrooms, we recommend using expansive furniture as an eye-catcher, such as a large bed.

Make your bedroom really YOURS

Bare surfaces are one thing that we do not like at all in the bedroom. That’s why the decoration comes in third place for our tips. With decoration, you can personalise your space and change it again and again. The nice thing about it is that the decoration box is nearly bursting, with items ranging from fabrics to fairy lights, vases, pictures, sculptures, furniture, lanterns and plants. You can form groups with accessories that each have colour, pattern or material in common in advance to ensure coherence. Let’s add some charm to it!
If you also want to personalise your bedroom, you can make a headboard out of jute ribbons, use bamboo canes for a real jungle flair or rock yourself to sleep with a hanging bed.

Fluffy, cosy, flooring

A light, cosy rug was laid on the bedroom floor.
Rugs, plaids and extra cushions are a great way to draw attention to the decoration and put an end to bare surfaces.

Make the bedroom cosier with a flick of the wrist? This can be done with rugs, plaids and a bunch of extra cushions. They are the ultimate opponents of cool parquet or laminate flooring. Say bye-bye to cold feet, and hello to your all-weather companion! Because no matter whether summer or winter temperatures, textiles made of natural materials such as cotton, merino wool or linen are suitable for all four seasons.

Let there be light!

A globe lamp with a large light bulb in it stands on a modern wooden chest of drawers.
Skilfully staged: the right lighting creates a cosy atmosphere in the bedroom. The design of the lamps can also make an individual statement.

You should combine various light sources to create a cosy ambience. For example, bright reading lights are complemented with atmospheric background light from wall, pendant or floor lamps, which emit their light indirectly into the room. If you are looking for a special eye-catcher, you can build a floating bedside lamp in a cool retro look yourself with our step-by-step guide.

Need storage space?

Storage space – a tricky subject. The first thought is often that you have to buy new furniture if you run out of storage space. But that does not have to be the case. Instead, you should take your eyes off the ground and look up a little: Bingo, the walls! You can use the wall in the room as a convenient means for creating storage space, for example, with wardrobe hooks or free-standing shelves. A wall shelf that can be easily and flexibly adapted at any time is particularly convenient. You can find a step-by-step guide here.

A few more tricks:

  1. Storage space can be created in corners, on the short side of the room or under sloping ceilings.
  2. Decorative boxes, baskets and containers next to the bed are ideal for storing odds and ends.
  3. Sufficient storage space is good, but invisible storage space is better. Best suited for this task are extendable furniture or multifunctional pieces of furniture such as a wooden bed with integrated drawers.

‘Curtains open’ for beautiful window textiles

A light green, floor-skirting, opaque curtain adorns the wall against which a large bed stands. A semi-transparent white curtain has been hung in front of the window.
Let in daylight or block prying eyes – there is a wide range of curtains that serve both purposes. In addition, curtains can enhance the colour scheme further and provide cosy colour accents to your bedroom, making for a good night’s sleep!

Whether you like it pitch black when you sleep or prefer to be woken up by the shining sun – there are numerous options when it comes to curtains for the bedroom: from opaque, heavy fabrics that keep the light out and protect you from prying eyes to elegant semi-transparent fabrics that offer privacy, yet let light through at the same time, right through to transparent delicate window textiles. In general, the following rule applies: daylight is important because it determines our biorhythm.
