Here's our guide to replacing a toilet seat

Is your toilet seat broken or fancy an upgrade but you’re unsure how to replace it? No problem just follow our simple step-by-step guide.

What you will need to change a toilet seat

  • Tape measure
  • Screwdriver
  • Protective gloves
  • New toliet seat

Step 1

Before you replace your toilet seat, check the measurements of your toilet to ensure you choose the correct size seat. To do this use a tape measure and wear protective gloves. Measure across the toilet and then the length from the middle of the fitting holes to the front of your toilet bowl. Make sure to take note of your measurements and choose a seat that fits your toilet.

Step 2

Once you have your chosen seat, it’s time to remove the old one. Most toilet seats are attached to the toilet with two bolts hidden under plastic caps at the back of the toilet.

Start by removing the plastic caps; use a flat-headed screwdriver to do this. It may be tricky to remove if you have an older toilet seat. Next, remove the bolts that attach the seat to the toilet.

Step 3

Now it’s time to fit your new toilet seat. Always read the instructions provided by the manufacturer first.

Start by attaching the new fittings to your toilet, using your hands to tighten the nuts on the bolts. Make sure not to over tighten the nuts. Next place the seat over your toilet and line up the fittings to the back of the seat. Make sure the seat is straight and then tighten the nuts once you’re happy. You may need pliers.
