Drill a hole for the cable
You need: YOUseries Drill, YOUseries Bit and Drill Set, metal bowl, a piece of wood to work on
To make the lampshade for this designer lamp, you will need a large metal bowl. You can also definitely acquire this type of bowl from your favourite interior designer. Start by drilling a hole for the lamp cable in the middle of the bowl. Use a size-8 drill bit so that the cable can fit through the hole without any problems.
TIP
Drill additional holes for the fixture
You need: YOUseries Drill, YOUseries Bit and Drill Set, lamp fixture with lip, nail, a piece of wood to work on
Next, use a size-4 bit to drill the holes for the lamp fixture. You will need a fixture that has a lip with two holes in it so that it can be bolted to the lampshade. Hold the fixture in the middle of the base of the bowl and mark the drill holes using a nail to make sure you position them correctly.
Also drill a hole in the bowl where you want to attach it to the base. Test out which angle you like the best. Use the size-8 bit again to make this hole.
TIP
Spruce up your wooden block
You need: YOUseries Sander, YOUseries Sanding Paper G80, paint brush, block of wood, wood stain
We will be using a block of wood as the base of our lamp. We recommend asking for a block with the required dimensions from your local DIY store. Sand the block down thoroughly on all sides using the YOUseries Sander, then coat it with wood stain using the paintbrush.
Spray paint the inside of the bowl
You need: YOUseries Sander, YOUseries Sanding Paper, gold spray paint with gloss
Now we’re going to turn your metal bowl into a designer lampshade! Start by sanding it a little, both inside and out. Make sure the surfaces are clean and dry before applying the spray paint. Start with the inside and spray paint it gold. Spray paint the outside of your lamp fixture separately.
Spray paint the outside of the bowl
You need: Black spray paint with gloss
As soon as the gold paint on the inside has dried, you can spray paint the outside of the bowl black. To do this, lay out newspaper on the floor and place the lamp shade face down on top of it. This way, no black paint will enter the inside of the lampshade.
Position the lamp fixture
You need: black fabric cable, two screws (4 x 60 mm), two nuts
As soon as the black paint has dried, you can feed the fabric cable through the middle of the bowl. You can now also pre-assemble the fixture: Push two screws through the holes from the inside, and then screw two matching nuts onto them from the outside. Important: have a qualified electrician connect the lamp or check your connection. Do not tighten the fittings until this has been done.
Mounting the lampshade on the wooden base
You need: YOUseries Drill, YOUseries Bit and Drill Set, Golden screw (e.g. torx 3,5 x 60 mm) to attach the bowl
Next, join the lampshade and base together. Insert a screw into the pre-drilled hole and screw down the lampshade with the cordless screwdriver.
Last but not least: Screw the lightbulb into the fixture, plug the lamp in – and let there be light!
