Introduction

An out of the ordinary loft bed always goes down well, especially if it’s been designed in a creative way, like our DIY version for young sports fans. Our step-by-step guide will show you how to build your own loft bed from pallets, wooden ladders and a tennis net. The result is sure to make your children’s hearts beat faster and dream of world champion trophies.

Have you heard about our 18-volt system yet? It offers a huge variety of devices for many different applications. The thing that makes the project below so special is that you can use the same rechargeable battery for every part of this project. Simply swap out the battery pack, insert it into a different device that’s part of the 18V system and move on to the next step.

It should go without saying that your safety is paramount at every stage of the project. Make sure you take the necessary precautions to protect yourself. You can find everything you need to know about the correct protective clothing you need when using each type of tool in our overview.

You need
  • Square
  • pencil
  • g-clamps
  • spirit level
  • plastic sheet
  • Non-returnable pallet, 1 x 2 m
  • Three wooden ladders in desired length or height
  • Tennis net
  • Four wooden slats, square, 50 x 50 mm
  • Two wooden slats, 20 x 60 mm
  • 5x80 mm wood screws
  • 5x100 mm wood screws
  • Wood paint
  • Suitable plugs and screws for wall mounting
L: Length, W: Width, H: Height, D: Diameter

Let's go - step by step

Step 1 5

Sanding the pallets and ladders

A wooden ladder is being sanded down using a multi-sander.
You will have to sand more or less intensively, depending on the condition of the ladders and pallets.

You need: Multi-sander, Non-returnable pallet, 1 x 2 m, Three wooden ladders in desired length or height

The base of the new loft bed is a simple non-returnable pallet measuring 1 x 2 m. And there are three wooden ladders. Their size depends on how high you want the bed to be later on. You may have to shorten them a bit. In any case, you should sand the pallet and all ladders thoroughly beforehand.

Step 2 5

Building and drilling the support frame

A squared timber is being measured and marked.
A squared timber is being shortened using a jigsaw.
A squared timber is being screwed to a pallet.
In ein Vierkantholz wird seitlich ein Loch gebohrt.

You need: Cordless combi drill, Standard Screwdriver Bit Mixed Sets, Puuporanteräsarja, 5 osaa, kuusiokara, Jigsaws, HCS jigsaw blade for curved cuts, U 1 AO, g-clamps, pencil, Square, Sanded pallet from step 1, Four wooden slats, square, 50 x 50 mm, 14 5x80 mm wood screws

You will build a support frame below the pallet in the next step. To do so, you need to saw two squared timbers to the length of the (long) side of the pallet. To do so, place the slats on the long side and mark the corresponding lengths (picture 1). Then saw both squared timbers to size (picture 2).

You also need a squared timber for each of the short sides to make a complete frame. Measure the lengths here, too, and saw the slats to size.

Then clamp the four sawn slats to the underside of the pallet and fasten them at the pallet blocks using screws (picture 3). Please make sure to predrill the holes with a suitable drill bit (5 mm wood drill bit).

The bed will be mounted to the wall in the corner of the room later on. Drill four holes on one long side and two holes on one short side with a 6 mm wood drill bit for greater pallet stability (picture 4). You will later screw the bed to the wall using these holes.

Step 3 5

Building the frame for the mattress

A wooden slat is being shortened using a jigsaw.
A wooden slat is being screwed to a pallet.

You need: Cordless combi drill, Standard Screwdriver Bit Mixed Sets, Jigsaws, HCS jigsaw blade for curved cuts, U 1 AO, g-clamps, pencil, Square, Two wooden slats, 20 x 60 mm, 5x80 mm wood screws

Now turn the pallet over on the workbench. You now need to mount from above a frame to hold the mattress. A word of caution: You do not need to make the frame for the mattress all around because the bed will be mounted directly onto the wall in a corner for the room. So you only need it on one short and one long side of the pallet.

Measure two wooden slats for the short and long side and saw them to size (picture 1). Then clamp the two slats vertically (see picture 2) to the pallet and screw them in place.

Now there should be drill holes for wall mounting on two sides of the bed and the slats for the frame of the mattress on the other two sides.

Step 4 5

Painting the pallet

A pallet is being painted using a paint spray system.
It is best to place the palette on a small mount when you use a paint spray system.

You need: Boschin maaliruiskujärjestelmä, plastic sheet, Wood paint

The structure for the mattress is now ready. Now it’s time for a little colour.
The best way to do this is to lay out a plastic sheet and place the pallet on a small mount. You can use a paint spray system to easily apply paint from all sides. You’ll find everything you need to know about paint spray systems in our guide. Of course, you can also use a conventional brush to paint the pallet.

Step 5 5

Attaching the bed and ladders

A loft bed made from a pallet with wooden ladders as legs.
You should definitely get one or more helping hands when mounting the bed to the wall.

You need: Cordless combi drill, Standard Screwdriver Bit Mixed Sets, g-clamps, spirit level, Painted pallet from step 4, Suitable plugs and screws for wall mounting, 5x100 mm wood screws, Tennis net

If, as in our example, you also want to make the wall behind the bed colourful, you should definitely paint it before mounting the bed onto the wall. The paint spray system is also very suitable for these painting jobs.

Has the paint on the wall dried? Then you can attach your bed to the wall using screws. To do so, you need a corresponding number of plugs and suitable screws. The properties of your wall determine the quantity you will need. Therefore, you should seek the advice of an expert before you start drilling.

The pallet bed should still definitely be held up by a couple of strong arms, even if it is screwed to the wall. But to prevent this from becoming a permanent state of affairs, the ladders now come into play. Clamp the ladders one by one in the right position on the pallet. Make sure they all hang at the same height and support the bed evenly. It is also important to have a stable connection at all points of contact between the pallet and the three ladders.

Now it gets a little tricky again: You have to clamp the tennis net between the individual ladders and the pallet. Do this step by step, releasing one clamp at a time for a brief moment while you place the net in-between.

Once everything is in place, you can simply attach the ladders with long screws. Well done!
