Nine ideas for designing a boy’s or girl’s room

A modern furnished child’s bedroom with a small play rug, toys, an armchair and an open shelf.
Our nine ideas for a child’s bedroom make it easy for you to find a suitable design and the right furniture for your child(ren).

Clever division of space: sometimes useful, sometimes stylish

A wooden framed structure with taut ropes separates a child’s bedroom into two areas.
It often makes sense to divide your child’s room into different areas, such as a play area and a sleeping area. This makes it easier for children to engage with the individual phases of the day.

If siblings share a bedroom, it often makes sense to create a separate area for each, especially when you have a boy and a girl. This avoids arguments while creating privacy. But even if each child has their own bedroom, many parents want to visually separate the bed from the play area so that it is easier for the children to go to bed at night. Room partitioners should neither be too large nor make the room too dark. Shelves accessible on both sides for books or toys are ideal. In smaller rooms, a light-coloured curtain, a stylish screen or – a bit more creative – a wooden framed structure with taut ropes is also recommended.

Functional or imaginative: taking advantage of the space under the bed

A bunk bed with two bunks in a child’s bedroom. The lower bunk is on castors, allowing it to be easily moved. This creates a free space for furniture under the upper bunk.
A bunk bed provides a sleeping space for two children that frees up floor space. Bunk beds or loft beds are recommended for children with their own bedroom, because they free floor space for other furniture or toys.

The bunk bed or loft bed is a real mainstay in a child’s bedroom. It frees up a lot of space that can be used for other things. A bunk bed provides space for two children to sleep in the space of just one bed, whereas a loft bed frees up floor space for other furniture under it, such as a desk or a shelf. The space underneath can also be converted into a reading corner with a mattress and a few cushions. Or you can cover the front with an old bed sheet, which creates a den that is perfect for robbers to hide and play in. Check out our step-by-step guide and build your own cool loft bed with extra storage space.

A carpet for warmth and protection

A boy and his father lie on a warm carpet and play with stuffed animals in a child’s bedroom.
Children often sit or lie on the floor when playing. A play rug keeps them warm and sometimes even has printed motifs that can be incorporated into play.

A soft, warming surface to sit or lie on is important in the child’s bedroom because children often like to play while sitting on the floor. Which is why a large carpet is well-suited as a floor covering. It usually also visually enhances the room and cushions falls during play, especially when roughhousing. It should definitely have a rubberised underside to prevent the carpet from moving around in such situations. Play rugs are particularly popular with younger children because they can be directly involved in play thanks to printed motifs such as street or jungle landscapes.

Creatively designed walls

Bare walls are far too boring for a child’s bedroom. Removable wall decals and stickers can be used to design them in a variety of ways, for example, with favourite animal motifs, fairytale characters or colourful patterns. Unlike wallpaper, such wall decorations can also be removed quite easily. Check out our step-by-step DIY guide to see how you can make your own creative DIY measuring pole from wall decals/stickers. Of course, pictures that your children have drawn or painted themselves are also suitable as wall decorations. You can use a steel cable that has been stretched on the wall, for example, to hang them from clips and avoid having to hammer a new nail into the wall each time This way, old masterpieces can also be quickly exchanged for new ones.

A retreat for dreaming

The picture shows a play tent from the inside as well as several cushions and stuffed animals.
A retreat gives children a place to read and daydream. Play tents can be bought in furniture stores. But you can also build a cuddly den yourself with a few cushions and long lengths of fabric attached to the ceiling.

Children love retreats where they can hide, daydream or flick through their favourite book in peace. A cosy tepee is very suitable for this and is also a visual highlight in a child’s bedroom. If you want to build a shelter like this yourself, place a beanbag in a corner and hang a canopy over it using long strips of fabric that stretch all the way down to the floor. Add a few fairy lights as a curtain – and your child’s new favourite place to hang out is ready. A special playground is also a place where children can completely immerse themselves in their own world. Check out our step-by-step guide and build a your own play kitchen – an ideal place to play.

Storage space for clothes and toys

It is incredible how many toys, books and children’s clothing accumulate over time. You should have enough storage space to nevertheless ensure a semblance of tidiness in your child’s bedroom and that you can pick things up relatively quickly. Clothes are best kept in drawers and wardrobes because they do not collect dust there. In contrast, toys should be kept in drawers or baskets, which in turn can be stored on open shelves. Check out our step-by-step guide and build a beautiful, open wooden shelf  yourself. However, if you prefer to pack toys away properly, you can also make a DIY toy box on wheels. With a little creativity, you can find even more ideas to keep a child’s bedroom tidy. Books, for example, not only look good on shelves, but also on photo strips hung from the wall where they become a decorative element when placed with the book cover facing forwards.

An appointed place for drawing on the wall

One wall in a child’s bedroom has been painted with blackboard paint, making it ideal to use as a surface for chalk drawings.
You do not have to keep your children from drawing on the walls if there is a appointed place for it. A little chalkboard paint creates a surface on the wall in your child’s bedroom for creative chalk drawings, which can be wiped away later.

Children love to draw and paint, and there is nothing wrong with it. Just not when it happens to be on the living room wall. On the other hand, you do not want to dampen their creativity. The solution: set up an appointed place in your child’s bedroom where the joy of drawing on the wall can be lived out to their heart’s content. To do this, chalkboard paint is applied to a section of the wall or you can cover the door of a wardrobe with self-adhesive chalkboard foil. As with a normal blackboard, the chalk drawings can be wiped away again. The drawing board for young artists is ready. And there’s more: If you are looking for an unusual wall decoration, you can check out our tutorial and see how to use an old tennis racket to make a chalkboard.

The right lighting creates a nice atmosphere

A string of lights with large light bulbs was hung on the wall in a child’s bedroom.
The light in your child’s bedroom should not be too cold or too harsh. Fairy lights, LED lanterns and night lights spread a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Light has a great influence on whether children feel comfortable in their room. Hard, cold lighting creates an uncomfortable atmosphere. We recommend having both a main light source and subtle background lighting. For the latter, you can use fairy lights, small starry sky projectors or LED-powered lanterns that you can make together with your child. Open candles should be avoided at all costs because of the fire hazard! Special nightlights help children fall asleep at night. These come in various forms, from corded lights to the illuminated cuddly toy with integrated music box. So nothing stands in the way of a gentle slumber.

A place for parents and grandparents to rest

There is another thing that parents should also think about when they furnish their child’s bedroom: the seating. Some parents do not mind sitting on the floor with their children to play or read books, but what about the grandparents? For older people, there should be a comfortable place to sit. A stylish beanbag chair seems like a good idea at first. However, due to its low position and soft filling, it is usually not the right solution because it can be difficult to get up from it. An upholstered wicker chair, an armchair or hanging chair are more inviting when spending more time in the child’s bedroom.
