What types of grass trimmers are available?

Bosch offers both mains-powered electric grass trimmers and several battery-powered models.

Corded grass trimmers

Corded grass trimmers have several advantages, including their low weight, and they're the most affordable option in the range due to their simple technology. They're ready to be used whenever they’re needed since they don’t rely on a battery and offer consistent performance – provided there's a power socket nearby. However, for larger gardens where a cable would be cumbersome, a battery grass trimmer is the better choice.

Cordless grass trimmers offer flexibility, as they are not restricted by power cords and sockets. They can be used far away from the sockets and are ideal for small to medium gardens and on highly irregular plots. However, those who don't want to take long breaks should have at least one charged spare battery ready at all times. Bosch cordless grass trimmers are supplied with a charger and matching battery. Most practically, they're part of the POWER FOR ALL system for cordless tools. A single battery can be used for many other garden tools and equipment from various brands.

Brushcutters are available in the Bosch range both as battery-powered and corded models. You can switch between different cutting tools – line or blade. Brushcutters can also handle taller grass and light undergrowth.

Power and battery runtime: How powerful a grass trimmer is will depend on the motor power in watts (W) or the battery voltage in volts (V). What should be considered when choosing a trimmer?

Garden size

Generally speaking, a tool with a larger cutting diameter is recommended for larger gardens. However, the type of vegetation in a garden is perhaps even more important than its size.

Type of vegetation

If a garden’s grass and weeds are very dense, a blade trimmer is a good choice. A line trimmer, meanwhile, is suitable for fine work on edges and corners.

Power supply

Each power supply type has its advantages and disadvantages. Electric grass trimmers are an affordable option but are only available with a cable. Availability of power source

If the power source is further away or managing the cable would be awkward due to trees, shrubs, angles or corners, a cordless grass trimmer is recommended. Battery power – 18 or 36 volts

Choosing a cordless grass trimmer means also choosing its voltage. An 18 V tool is perfectly adequate for edge cutting in small to medium-sized gardens – those of terraced and detached houses, for example. A 36 V tool is recommended for medium to large gardens where there are tougher shrubs, nettles and weeds that need taming. The length of the grass makes no difference regardless of the voltage.

Diameter

The larger the cutting diameter, the faster the job gets done. Bosch's 18 V cordless grass trimmers offer cutting diameters between 23 and 26 cm and are also very light. The 36 V cordless model covers more area in less time with its 33 cm diameter, though it's larger and heavier. Corded models range between 23 and 30 cm. The brushcutter, meanwhile, has a smaller diameter due to its interchangeable cutting tool, but its metal blades deliver the same performance as line grass trimmers despite their reduced size.
