Electric and Cordless Chainsaws from Bosch: Essential Garden Tools

The right chainsaw is an indispensable tool for many home and garden projects – from pruning thick branches and cutting firewood to DIY projects. It makes gardening tasks significantly easier, making short work of even the thickest trees. Bosch chainsaws offer hobby gardeners an excellent combination of power, safety and user-friendliness and are reliable tools for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. Tackle garden projects efficiently and enjoy professional results.

What is a chainsaw used for?

A chainsaw is extremely versatile and can be used in numerous gardening and DIY projects. Unlike conventional reciprocating saws or pruning saws, chainsaws enable effective cuts in a short time with minimal effort.

The application areas for electric chainsaws and cordless chainsaws include:

Garden maintenance

Garden maintenance: Pruning branches and thinning out trees and shrubs are classic uses for electric chainsaws or battery chainsaws. Chainsaws allow for the efficient shaping of trees and shrubs whilst promoting plant health.

Firewood preparation

Firewood preparation: An electric or cordless chainsaw is the ideal tool for cutting firewood. They save considerable time and effort compared to using a hand saw, especially when dealing with larger quantities of wood.

DIY projects

DIY projects: A chainsaw simplifies the prep for DIY projects like making garden furniture, building fences or preparing wood panels before other tools, such as sanders, complete the finishing touches.

Clearance work

Clearance work: A chainsaw can help to quickly clear broken branches or remove unwanted trees and shrubs as part of a garden redesign or after storms.

What types of chainsaws are there?

There are several different types of chainsaws with different drive types.

Petrol chainsaws: Classic chainsaws with petrol engines are useful for intensive work and in forestry. However, they are relatively heavy and the fuel they use produces significant exhaust fumes. Bosch focuses on chainsaws that run on battery and electric motors, which are more practical for hobby gardeners.

Cordless chainsaws: Cordless chainsaws offer maximum freedom and are ideal for mobile work in hard-to-reach garden areas where access to power is difficult. Due to their flexibility, small chainsaws or mini chainsaws with batteries are particularly suitable for cutting individual branches. For extensive gardening tasks, cordless chainsaws with a longer guide bar and a powerful 36V chainsaw battery are more suitable.

Thanks to POWER-FOR-ALL, Bosch batteries in the same voltage class are compatible with other home and garden cordless tools, making it easy to use existing batteries as spares.

Electric chainsaws: Corded electric chainsaws are ideal for longer periods of work in one fixed location. Connecting to the mains ensures a constant power supply, making uninterrupted extensive DIY projects or sawing tasks possible.

Electric chainsaws and battery chainsaws from Bosch are relatively loud, but they are significantly quieter than their petrol-powered equivalents. They are also lighter and more environmentally friendly. This means they are a great choice for hobby gardeners who work in residential areas and allotments.

Chainsaw features

When selecting a chainsaw, it is important to consider the different technical features of different models and types. Here are the technical specifications to consider with Bosch chainsaws:

Power: The rated power of electric chainsaws is given in watts, while cordless chainsaws display the battery voltage in volts. These values indicate how powerful a saw is. 18V Bosch cordless chainsaws are powerful enough for most garden and DIY projects. Our AdvancedChain model features an even more powerful 36-volt drive, and the motor power of our corded electric chainsaws is an impressive 1,800 watts.

Bar length and cutting capacity: The bar length determines the thickness of the branches, trunks or wood pieces that a chainsaw can cut. In the Bosch range, bar length varies from 15 cm for compact mini saws to 35 cm for the most powerful chainsaws. As a rule of thumb, the maximum cutting capacity is approximately two to five centimetres less than the bar length.

Brushless motors: Bosch offers models with brushless motors and models with conventional motors. Brushless motors have a longer lifespan and offer more power; they also require less maintenance.

Special technologies: Bosch chainsaws feature various innovative technologies depending on the model. Here are a few of our special technologies:

  • OptiCut: Adjusts torque and speed for continuous cutting, which is particularly important for demanding tasks.
  • SDS clamping system: Allows for efficient chain tensioning without additional tools through a tool-free clamping system.
  • Tip protector: Helps cordless chainsaws to stabilise and enables more precise cuts.
  • Automatic oil lubrication: Regulates the chainsaw's oil supply for smooth and easy cutting, ensuring that the chainsaw is continuously lubricated during use.

What to consider when buying a chainsaw

There are various factors to consider in finding the right chainsaw.

Garden size and application area: A mini chainsaw is ideal for small gardens with light chainsaw tasks, occasional branch pruning and smaller DIY projects. It is easy to handle and suitable for beginners. Medium-sized gardens with regular cutting work and large gardens with demanding tasks such as felling small trees or cutting larger quantities of firewood, however, require a powerful electric or cordless chainsaw with a longer guide bar. Generally, choose the bar length based on the largest diameter that will need cutting.

Working at heights: A cordless chainsaw with a telescopic pole is the best choice for regularly cutting branches at greater heights. It is the safest and most practical solution, allowing higher branches to be reached without a ladder.

Long-term cutting work in one location: A corded chainsaw is ideal for cutting firewood or completing longer work at a fixed location, as it offers constant power without battery changes.

Working in confined spaces: The mini chainsaw EasyChain 18V-15-7 is easy to handle and specifically designed for precise cuts with its ultra-compact gear system.

Battery or corded operation: Cordless chainsaws are ideal for work in remote garden areas. Those who have Bosch 18V or 36V batteries from other tools can use them interchangeably with these tools. Corded electric chainsaws are the better choice for longer, uninterrupted work in a single location, as they offer a constant power supply without the need for battery changes.

Weight and ergonomics: Weight and ergonomics play an important role in preventing premature fatigue, especially for longer work with a chainsaw. It's worth considering which technologies – such as OptiCut, SDS clamping systems or tip protectors – would be most useful for which projects.
